We are a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization affiliated with DBSA National, a nationwide organization, reaching out to those with depression and bipolar disorder. DBSA Greater Houston is currently the largest chapter in the nation. The vision of our organization is for every person with depression or bipolar disorder to enhance his or her recovery from the illnesses through participation in DBSA Greater Houston sponsored support groups. Our sponsored support groups also serve to sustain family members and friends who are trying to understand these two difficult, yet treatable, mental illnesses, as they try to assist their loved ones. In addition, we work to educate the public about mood disorders, confront social stigma and advocate for the rights of people living with mental illness.
At our support groups, participants are able to:
|
Make connections |
• Meeting with others helps individuals to feel less alone and isolated. The desire to be isolated is often the first symptom of the disease. If indulged, the tendency toward isolation can create devastating results.
• Support groups provide a safe environment, filled with compassion and understanding, and help to reduce stigmas attached to the disorder. |
|
Improve coping
skills |
• Support groups offer the chance to build upon the collective experiences of group participants. Others may be able to offer advice on past experiences and brainstorm to offer new ideas.
• Comparing experiences with various medications, doctors and therapists is often very helpful to the participants. |
|
Get motivated |
• Support groups will often encourage people to seek out professional treatment for the first time or persuade people to take a more active role in their existing treatment. |
|
Find hope |
• Making personal connections and witnessing the success of others will often give participants and family members hope for their own future. |
DBSA Greater Houston sponsors over 64 weekly support groups that are held in Brazoria, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris and Montgomery counties. Click here to find a support group near you.
