I was newly diagnosed at age 52 and absolutely scared – my support group helped me to conquer my fears and move forward.

Adolescents
In 2009 DBSA Greater Houston began discussions with Communities in Schools Houston about collaborating to offer more groups to teenagers in need. This relationship is beginning to show results with two new groups starting in March 2010 at two of Houston’s most disadvantaged high schools – Lamar and John H. Reagan. In addition, DBSA Greater Houston is working with the Juvenile Mental Health Court of Harris County to ensure the youths served by this Court are informed of DBSA support group services.
Seniors and Caregivers
Recent studies have shown that some of the highest rates of depression can be found in our community’s elderly population. In response, DBSA Greater Houston now sponsors a support group at West University Place Community Center for seniors experiencing the symptoms of or diagnosed with depression. Because of the success of our seniors support group, a second support group offered exclusively for seniors will be opening later in the year.
In addition, caring for a loved one, such as a spouse or parent, with these illnesses can be emotionally exhausting and mentally unhealthy. Studies have shown that caregivers, when compared to the general population, suffer twice the rate of depression. DBSA Greater Houston now sponsors a Caregivers Support Group for those caring for a loved one living with a chronic mental, physical or terminal illness (e.g. depression, Alzheimer’s and all forms of dementia, cancer, etc…).
Veterans
DBSA Greater Houston sponsors a support group tailored to the brave men and women of the armed forces. Understanding the difficulties in serving one’s country, prompted DBSA Greater Houston to offer this unique group. The support group meets every Wednesday evening at the new veterans domiciliary located in the Houston Medical Center. All veterans, their family members and friends are welcome to attend.
For more information about these unique support groups, please look at the list of support groups or call the DBSA Greater Houston office at 713.600.1131.
