FAQs
Who can attend the groups?
Adults, 18 and older, who have the symptoms of or are diagnosed with depression or bipolar disorder. Family members, friends and caregivers are invited to attend the support groups as they will learn more about each illness and find the strength to empower their loved ones to a healthier life.
Do you have any groups for children?
No, we currently do not sponsor adolescent groups in the community.
What kind of therapy is used in your groups?
We do not provide therapy in our groups, but attending a support group can be very therapeutic. Instead, our support groups are “process” groups whereby participants are given an opportunity to share anything related to depression or bipolar disorder. Other participants will in turn provide support, education, empowerment and empathy. The support groups also encourage individuals to continue receiving outside therapy and/or treatment.
What is the cost of a group and do you take my insurance?
DBSA sponsored support groups are completely free and confidential. We do not ask for insurance or have eligibility requirements for those choosing to attend.
Do you diagnose people?
No. Please contact an appropriate health care professional to be evaluated.
How do I find a therapist/psychiatrist?
Call the number on the back of your insurance card and ask for a list of mental health providers. If you are uninsured please call Mental Health of America at 713.522.5161 to discuss medical alternatives. DO NOT let a lack of health insurance prevent you from receiving necessary care related to you or your loved ones mood disorder.
Where are the telephone numbers for the locations?
We do not provide numbers for the individual locations because we have found out that many locations are not able to answer questions about the groups. Instead, they are generously donating their space. To find out about individual support group locations and times, please call our office at 713.600.1131 Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm or visit our website at www.dbsahouston.org to find the support group location nearest you.
What do you talk about at groups?
We talk about depression and bipolar disorder and how these mood disorders affect people in their personal life, job and overall functioning. We provide a safe place to share ideas for coping, support, management and recovery. Simply put, support groups work!
