BENEFITS OF SUPPORT GROUPS

Make connections
• Meeting with others helps individuals to feel less alone and isolated. The desire to be isolated is often the first symptom of the disease. If indulged, the tendency toward isolation can create devastating results.
• Support groups provide a safe environment, filled with compassion and understanding, and help to reduce stigmas attached to the disorder.
Improve coping
skills
• Support groups offer the chance to build upon the collective experiences of group participants. Others may be able to offer advice on past experiences and brainstorm to offer new ideas.
• Comparing experiences with various medications, doctors and therapists is often very helpful to the participants.
Get motivated
• Support groups will often encourage people to seek out professional treatment for the first time or persuade people to take a more active role in their existing treatment.
Find hope
• Making personal connections and witnessing the success of others will often give participants and family members hope for their own future.
